The Glass Bees: The Vatican's First Digital Scribe
In the early 1980s, long before the World Wide Web promised to digitize everything, a quiet revolution was taking place in a small studio in Vatican City. Its protagonist was not a cardinal or a theologian, but a Jesuit priest and computer scientist named Father Roberto Busa. His life’s work, which began in the 1940s, would become a foundational, yet often overlooked, chapter in the history of digital preservation. He wasn't archiving web pages, but something arguably more daunting: the entire corpus of writings of St. Thomas Aquinas and his contemporaries. The scale was biblical, amounting to approximately 11 million words of Medieval Latin.
Busa’s quest began with an analog problem: he wanted to create a massive concordance, an index of every word Aquinas ever used, to trace the evolution of philosophical concepts. Doing this by hand would have taken lifetimes. His radical idea was to use a machine. In 1949, he famously secured the support of IBM's founder, Thomas J. Watson, by demonstrating his conviction that these new “computing machines” could be tools for the humanities, not just for ballistics or accounting. The project, the Index Thomisticus, was born.
What makes Busa’s work so pivotal for our understanding of open data and preservation today is the medium he chose for the final output. By the 1970s, the textual analysis was complete, but how do you publish 11 million indexed words in a way that is accessible and, crucially, permanent? Printing it would have resulted in over 70 massive, prohibitively expensive volumes. So, Busa turned to a technology that was both cutting-edge and curiously fragile: the laser disc.
In the 1980s, the Vatican Press released the complete Index Thomisticus on a set of CD-ROMs, among the very first major scholarly works to do so. But Busa envisioned something more. He also produced a small number of copies on laser discs—those large, silvery platters that resemble futuristic vinyl records. I think of these discs as his “glass bees,” a term borrowed from Ernst Jünger’s novel about technological anxiety. They were beautiful, intricate, and precisely engineered artifacts, containing a vast swarm of linguistic data frozen in silicon. They were meant to last for centuries, a digital ark for a medieval mind.
The Paradox of the Pioneer
Herein lies the central irony that resonates with any digital archivist today. Busa, a pioneer who pushed technology to its limits to preserve the past, chose a preservation medium that would become practically unreadable within a generation. The specific drives and software required to read those laser discs are now museum pieces themselves. The very act of cutting-edge preservation created a new preservation crisis. The data was saved from the obscurity of un-indexed paper, only to be threatened by the obsolescence of its digital container.
Busa’s story is a humbling reminder that digital preservation is never a single act but a continuous chain of vigilance. The Index Thomisticus survives today because it was migrated, first to CD-ROM, then to the internet, where it now exists as a searchable online database. The glass bees, meanwhile, sit as silent monuments to a visionary’s gamble. They are not failures; they are the necessary prototypes that allowed the future to be built. Father Busa taught us that the first duty of a digital scribe is not just to inscribe, but to ensure that someone, someday, will still have the key to the library. The data must not only be stored; it must be kept awake.
