Now for the crucial second step: verification. Don’t just leave the file in a folder and forget about it. Open it. On any computer, right-click the .mbox file, choose “Open With,” and select a basic text editor like Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on Mac, or any code editor. You don’t need to read the entire thing. Just scroll. You’ll see clear, plain-text headers like “From:,” “Subject:,” and “Date:”. You’ll see the raw text of the email bodies. For attachments, you’ll see blocks of gibberish—the base64 encoding—which is exactly what you want to see. It confirms the data is all there, intact.
This act of looking is the heart of the technique. It’s the digital equivalent of checking the paper for foxing or ensuring the photograph isn’t stuck to the glass of its frame. You are bearing witness to the integrity of your archive. You are its first keeper. Store this verified MBOX file in multiple places: on an external hard drive, in a cloud storage service you trust, on a different device. The goal is redundancy.
This isn’t about creating a perfectly curated, searchable database of your correspondence. That’s a different, more complex project. This is about creating a durable, long-term time capsule.
