I clicked the link. The page loaded with a startling quickness that only something devoid of modern JavaScript trackers can manage. The data was there, presented in tidy, monospaced tables: stream flows, water temperatures, sediment levels. It was all incredibly precise, but it described a world that no longer existed. The river levels were for a watershed before a decade of drought, the temperatures from a climate that felt, in my memory, almost autumnal in its mildness. This wasn't just old data; it was a map to a lost territory. I felt a peculiar sensation, the archival equivalent of finding a perfectly preserved insect in amber. Here was a slice of the web, and by extension, a slice of reality, that had been cryogenically frozen by administrative neglect.
