The Compost Heap and the Archive: On Rot as a Process, Not a Failure
In my garden, there’s a black plastic bin where things go to decay. Apple cores, eggshells, fallen leaves—all the detritus of a living system. This compost heap is not a graveyard; it is a site of furious, invisible activity. The goal is not to arrest decomposition but to manage it. The aim is transformation: from discarded waste into rich, fertile soil. In our work with digital preservation, we have much to learn from this.
We speak of digital decay with a tone of lament. Bit rot, link rot, format obsolescence—these are the enemies. We fight them with checksums, migration strategies, and redundant backups. Our language is one of stasis and defense, of saving things from change. But what if, like the gardener, we considered that some change is not merely inevitable but essential? What if we understood that the vitality of an archive might depend on its capacity for controlled transformation?
The compost heap offers a different metaphor. It teaches us that a pile of static, unchanging matter is not healthy; it is inert. Life is defined by cycles of creation, use, and breakdown. The value of the vegetable peelings is unlocked only through their disintegration. Similarly, the raw data we seek to preserve is often not the final product. It is the raw material for future understanding, and that understanding requires a kind of processing.
A Managed Decomposition
In composting, you cannot just throw everything into a pile and expect good results. Meat and dairy rot in ways that attract pests and breed pathogens. A healthy heap needs the right balance of carbon and nitrogen, of greens and browns. It needs to be turned, to be aerated. The process must be managed. This is a profound lesson for archivists.
We might start by asking not just “How do we save this?” but “What should this become?” Instead of striving for a perfect, lossless mausoleum, could we design archives with a managed decomposition in mind? This might mean consciously deciding which metadata is essential to preserve verbatim, and which can be summarized or transformed. It might mean accepting that a JPEG’s compression artifacts are part of its history, not a flaw to be corrected. It is the equivalent of accepting that an apple core will break down, while the story of the apple tree it came from—its cultivar, its harvest date—is the nutrient we most want to save.
This perspective reframes the ‘loss’ inherent in migration and format shifts. When we convert a legacy word processor file to a plain text format, we lose fonts and formatting. We are, in a sense, allowing the proprietary shell of the document to rot away, leaving the core semantic content—the words themselves—to be more easily absorbed by future systems. We are composting the document for future use.
The goal is not to prevent all rot, but to guide it. It is to recognize that absolute preservation is a fantasy that can lead to brittle, unusable collections—digital landfills where everything is saved but nothing is accessible. A compost heap is a living system that enriches the whole garden. Perhaps our archives should aspire to be the same: not cold storage lockers, but dynamic ecosystems that transform the raw data of the past into fertile ground for the ideas of the future.
