The Cartographer of Decay: John Ogilby's Failing Atlas and the Web's Lost Maps
In 1675, a seventy-five-year-old Scottish dancing master turned cartographer named John Ogilby published a book meant to last for centuries. Britannia was a monumental feat: a series of strip maps detailing every major road in England and Wales, drawn at a scale of one inch to the mile. It was a revolutionary work of open data, intended for practical use by travellers, merchants, and the state. Ogilby didn't just draw lines; he catalogued landmarks, noted topography, and recorded distances with a surveyor’s precision. He created a system for navigating a physical world, a ledger of paths that were, until then, mostly known through local, perishable knowledge.
Today, over three centuries later, most copies of Britannia are falling apart. The book was designed as an atlas, with large, fold-out maps. The heavy paper, once a promise of durability, now creases and tears along those same folds. The leather bindings, meant to protect, have grown brittle. The very object designed for permanence is succumbing to the relentless physics of its own format. In libraries, conservators handle these volumes with a kind of archaeological care, knowing that each consultation risks another small loss. The data Ogilby worked so hard to make public is now trapped in a decaying medium.
This slow-motion loss of Britannia feels unnervingly familiar to anyone who cares about digital preservation. We are building our own atlases of the present moment—vast collections of open data, public records, and community websites. We believe that by making them digital, we are making them permanent. But we are merely changing the nature of their decay. The links in Ogilby’s atlas were physical folds and brittle paper; our links are URLs that point to servers long since decommissioned. His data faded with the ink; ours rots in formats that modern software can no longer parse.
Ogilby’s work was a centralized solution to a distributed problem. He gathered the scattered, informal knowledge of the road and consolidated it into a single, authoritative volume. The modern web, by contrast, is a hyper-distributed system. Our ‘Britannia’ is not one book in a library, but a trillion fragments across a billion servers. This makes it both more resilient and more fragile. A single library fire could destroy Ogilby’s life’s work. Today, no single event can destroy the entire web, but a quiet, piecemeal decay happens constantly, invisibly. A small business closes its doors and its website, a repository of local history and public notices, vanishes. A government agency updates its content management system and breaks every link to its old reports.
The lesson of Ogilby’s failing atlas isn't that we have failed to learn from the past. It's that permanence is an illusion in any medium. The goal of digital preservation, then, cannot be to build an unassailable fortress for data. That is Ogilby’s model, and we can see its eventual fate in the quiet conservation rooms of rare book libraries. Instead, our task is more dynamic: to become cartographers of decay itself. It is to map the vanishing paths of our own time, to continuously copy, migrate, and reinterpret the data before the formats crack and the links go dark. We are not building a single, perfect atlas for the ages. We are tending a garden of pathways, knowing that the work of keeping them clear is never finished.
