The Myth of the Original Order: Why Digital Objects Resist Archival Primitives
In the hushed, hallowed halls of physical archives, there is a principle as fundamental as preservation itself: respect des fonds, or the sanctity of the original order. The idea is that the arrangement of papers, files, and boxes as left by their creator is itself a crucial piece of evidence. To disrupt that order is to risk obscuring context, breaking chains of custody, and losing the subtle narrative embedded in the sequence. This principle has been so successful for managing physical collections that it has been carried over, almost as a sacred relic, into the digital preservation world. But what if this foundational wisdom is, in the context of bits and bytes, a myth?
The received wisdom goes something like this: when acquiring a digital collection—be it a professor’s hard drive, a defunct organization’s server, or a public official’s email inbox—the archivist’s first duty is to create a perfect forensic disk image. This bit-for-bit copy preserves the ‘original order’ of the data, the exact folder structures, file paths, and timestamps. It’s seen as the gold standard, the unassailable record of ‘how things were.’ The problem is, this digital original order is often a mirage, a superficial and near-meaningless veneer applied by an operating system that has no inherent understanding of importance, relationship, or value.
A filing cabinet has a single, physical order. A file exists in one folder, in one drawer. A digital file, however, can appear to be in a dozen places at once through shortcuts, aliases, and symbolic links. Is its ‘true’ location its physical block on the disk, or the folder the user interacted with? Furthermore, the apparent order on a hard drive is a frantic jumble of system files, application caches, and temporary downloads, all intermingled with documents of enduring value. The ‘original order’ of a messy desktop is often just chaos, not a curated arrangement worthy of preservation.
Worse, this slavish devotion to the forensic image can create an illusion of completeness that obscures significant loss. It preserves the container perfectly while potentially missing the context entirely. An archived hard drive might perfectly preserve a ‘Documents’ folder, but it cannot capture the network of shared drives, cloud services, and social media platforms that gave those documents their true meaning and purpose. The original order, in this case, is a map that shows a single city but omits the roads, railways, and flight paths that connect it to the world.
This isn’t to say that forensic imaging isn’t a vital tool—it is, for ensuring authenticity and recovering deleted data. But we must stop treating it as the ultimate goal. The real, arduous work of digital preservation is the active, interpretive act of imposing a new, meaningful order. It’s about extracting entities from the disk image and weaving them into a new contextual tapestry: linking emails to the documents they discuss, reassembling a website from its scattered components, or reconstructing the timeline of a project from a thousand file-creation dates. This new order isn’t a betrayal of the original; it’s the creation of a new, functional artifact that makes the collection intelligible to future researchers.
The myth of the digital original order offers a comforting semblance of control over the inherent fluidity of digital objects. But by clinging to it, we risk becoming mere curators of empty shells. True digital archiving is less like preserving a fossil and more like reconstructing an ecosystem from scattered bones. It requires us to be not just guardians, but active interpreters, building coherent structures where the original order was often merely an illusion of convenience.
