This creates a peculiar challenge for the digital archivist and the data historian. The error is now more robust than ever. It’s no longer subject to the decay of paper or the critical eye of a scholar comparing physical atlases. It exists as a clean, seemingly authoritative digital fact. The “fix” is not a simple erasure; it is a careful act of digital curation. It requires annotating the dataset, creating a provenance trail that explains the anomaly, and ensuring that future users understand they are looking at a cartographic legend, not a historical reality. We must preserve the record of the error itself, as it tells a story about the process of creation, but we must also prevent it from polluting our understanding of the past.
