The Preserver's Paradox: When Digitization Becomes a Form of Erasure

Conventional wisdom in digital preservation is straightforward: to save something, you must digitize it. The goal is a clean, accessible, and ‘perfect’ digital surrogate, liberated from the decay of the physical world. This axiom drives the meticulous scanning of documents, the high-resolution photography of artifacts, and the creation of vast, searchable databases. It is a deeply well-intentioned project. But I want to argue a counterintuitive point: in its pursuit of pristine accessibility, this brand of digitization can, paradoxically, become a sophisticated and final act of erasure. It doesn't just preserve an object; it replaces it, and in doing so, it often destroys the very context that gave the object meaning.

The Shadow of the Perfect Scan

Consider the scan of a handwritten letter. The archivist, aiming for clarity, might flatten it on a scanner, capture it in high-contrast grayscale, and run it through an OCR process. The resulting file is clear, text-searchable, and can be duplicated infinitely. But what has been lost? The texture of the paper, the faint watermarks holding the maker’s name, the scent of dust and ink, the way a deeply indented word on the third page suggests a moment of frustration—all these non-digital data points are extinguished. More subtly, the scan severs the letter from its ecosystem: its place in a box, tucked between a photograph and a dried flower. The perfect digital copy annihilates the ‘archival aura’—the tangible, spatial, and sensory story of the object's journey through time.

This phenomenon extends to public records. A city ledger, painstakingly typed into a database, becomes a set of searchable fields. The act of datafication, however, often strips away the marginalia, the coffee stains next to a controversial entry, the physical order of pages that reveals which clerk was working on which problem. We gain efficiency but lose the forensic evidence of human use. The digitized version is not a preservation of the record; it is the creation of a new, sanitized document that carries a different, and often diminished, truth.

The peril lies in the successor complex. Once a ‘perfect’ digital surrogate exists, the original is often deemed redundant, too fragile, too cumbersome. It is shuffled off to a dark storage room, deaccessioned, or even destroyed. The digital file becomes the primary source by default, and we forget that it is a heavily mediated interpretation. The scanner's software, the database schema, the compression algorithm—these are all filters, and they are not neutral. They make decisions about what information is valuable and what is noise, decisions that were once deferred to the researcher in a physical archive.

I am not arguing against digitization. I am arguing against its use as a one-click salvation. True preservation might be messier. It could mean high-resolution scans alongside photographs of the object in situ, detailed descriptions of its physical properties, and a conscious effort to keep the original accessible, even if under controlled conditions. It might mean embracing ‘imperfect’ digitization that captures shadows, depth, and scale. The goal should not be to replace the thing, but to create a richer, multi-layered testimony that acknowledges the digital copy as a witness, not the sole heir. Otherwise, in our rush to save everything from decay, we risk building a future of beautiful, searchable ghosts, while the body of the past quietly turns to dust in a locked room.
