The Conservator's Glove: Lessons for Digital Archives from Museum Mount-Making
In the dim light of a museum's object conservation lab, a specialist is building an armature. It is a delicate, skeletal thing of brass rods and padded forms, designed to hold a 17th-century textile in place without touching it, to support its weight while allowing its fibers to breathe and move with ambient humidity. This is the art of physical mounting—a discipline of near-invisible support. And it strikes me that those of us wrestling with digital preservation could learn a great deal from this quiet craft.
We often think of preservation as freezing a moment: a capture, a snapshot, a WARC file sealed in time. But a museum mount-maker understands that stasis is often the enemy. A rigid mount stresses the object; a perfectly still environment can be brittle. Instead, they design for constrained movement, for the inevitable fluctuations of temperature and the natural settling of materials. They ask: what does this object need to be itself, to retain its integrity, without being imprisoned? This is a profound shift from asking how we lock something away.
Now, translate this to our domain. We often treat a digital object—a born-digital government dataset, a complex web-based artwork, a social media thread—as something to be embalmed. We package it in a standard format, store it with checksums, and call it preserved. But is it supported, or is it merely suspended? The mount-maker would ask: what are the intrinsic stresses? For a database, it might be the decay of its relational logic when separated from its live query engine. For an interactive map, it might be the loss of the spatial context provided by the surrounding page. A good mount provides context, not just a container.
The second lesson is in the ethics of reversibility. A museum mount is designed to be dismantled without leaving a trace on the artifact. No adhesive, no perforation, no permanent alteration. This principle should haunt our digital preservation strategies. How many of our 'solutions' lock data into proprietary or obsolete formats, or normalize it in ways that strip out original metadata and structure? The mount-maker reminds us that our support systems must be temporary custodians, not eternal sculptors. The digital artifact must remain distinct from the apparatus we build to hold it.
Finally, there is the philosophy of the invisible hand. The best mount disappears, directing the viewer's attention wholly to the object it supports. Our digital preservation infrastructure—the migration scripts, the emulation layers, the complex accessioning databases—should aspire to the same self-effacement. The goal is not to showcase our clever archival technology, but to provide unmediated access to the record itself. The user should experience the 1996 webpage, not the 2024 viewing platform.
So, perhaps we need more digital mount-makers. Specialists who think not just in terms of bit-level integrity, but of structural, functional, and contextual support. Who design systems that allow digital objects to 'breathe' across migrations, that are reversible, and that ultimately disappear, leaving only the artifact, poised and readable, for the next curious visitor to find.
